Short-benched Excel Hull Stingrays produced a gutsy display as they went down 6-1 to Rapid Solicitors Elite League leaders Belfast Giants at the Odyssey Arena.

Stingrays, without Ryan Lake, Jereme Tendler, Matty Davies and Martin Ondrej, fell behind after just 153 seconds with Robert Dowd scoring a short-handed marker.

But Andy McKinney levelled for Stingrays with 112 seconds of the opening period left, with his fourth goal of the season.

Jeff Mason scored the only goal of the second session to put Giants – who out-shot Stingrays 19-1 in that period – back in front.

After a lengthy delay before the start of the third period due to ice repairs, Mason extended Giants’ lead on the powerplay.

Mike Hoffman added a brace in the final four minutes and Mason completed his hat-trick with 46 seconds left to round off the scoring.

Stingrays netminder Christian Boucher was named man of the match after facing 50 shots, with rival Stephen Murphy seeing just 13.

Stingrays take on Cardiff Devils at Hull Arena in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League on Sunday February 19 (6pm face-off). Tickets can be purchased by ringing the Hull Arena Box Office on 01482 325252.
