Excel Hull Stingrays went down to their second defeat in three days as they lost 5-3 to Cardiff Devils at Hull Arena in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League.
After Derek Campbell (Stingrays) and Kenton Smith (Devils) had hit the post, Stuart MacRae put the visitors ahead in the 10th minute on a five-on-three powerplay.
Jeff Pierce and MacRae (powerplay) added further markers in the second period but player-coach Sylvain Cloutier (powerplay) got Stingrays on the board 63 seconds before the break.
Jason Silverthorn, his 22nd of the season, cut the deficit with 11 minutes left and Cloutier came agonisingly close to making it 3-3 only for his effort to crash against the bar.
Devils immediately went down the other end and player-coach Gerad Adams rifled in a fourth.
Ben Davies made it 5-2 before Campbell and Jamie Vanderveeken dropped the gloves and were assessed five-minute fighting majors.
Silverthorn notched a third for Stingrays with 122 seconds left.
Cloutier, again without Ryan Lake, Jereme Tendler, Martin Ondrej and Matty Davies, said: “Considering we were short I thought we played well.
“You can tell with some of the goals they got we were just tired, they were mental mistakes.
“We had some chances but when you play two centres for two games in a row and when you only have eight guys up front and one of those is a 16-year-old kid with not a lot of experience, there is only so much you can do.
“We battled to the end but it has been a tough weekend. There is not much more we can ask.”
Stingrays take on Belfast Giants at Hull Arena in the Rapid Solicitors Elite League on Saturday February 25 (7pm face-off). Tickets can be purchased by ringing the Hull Arena Box Office on 01482 325252.
